Spawn #6 by Todd McFarlane

"Payback" Part 1
Dedicated To: Stan Lee
OVERT-KILL! In whispered voices, some call him "Overkill." It has to do with his tendency to go beyond the necessary means.

Gino told me that Overt-Kill thinks it's a Youngblood he's after. He had a run-in with them a few years back, and hasn't forgotten how they embarrassed him.

I'm not some drunk hobo that you can steamroll! Or are you afraid of someone who can fight back?!

A CYBORG! I fought them years ago, before I was killed. But they weren't nearly as advanced. Nor as deadly.

WildCATs: Covert Action Teams #1-4 (1992)

by Jim Lee with Brandon Choi & Co.

I... witnessed my own death. The death of Major Adrianna Tereshkova.

Heavy collateral damage... Best guess? Two rogue C.A.T.s duked it out in the middle of D.C.

You were once Lord Emp-- one of the four Lords of Power-- the champion of mankind.

...We may begin the reunification. Soon our Daemonite brothers shall join us in conquering this misbegotten planet.

You're all under arrest! Release the Vice-President! Now!

"Questions," Part 4
Dedicated To: Joe Shuster
Who gave you such powers?! Since when do humans begin to rate? They've always been too fragile for this!

Spawn continues his silence, for what does a man say to an offspring of the pits of Hell?

You have failed miserably! It is incompetents like you that make my battle against GOD so laborious!

Shadowhawk #1-4 (1992) by Jim Valentino

Out of the Shadows
His spinal column snaps like a twig. You are SHADOWHAWK... and you're taking back the night!

God, I love my job! The sweet fragrance of flickering flame! The bloom of the billowing smoke! The screams of the recently domestically displaced! All are like music to the ears of-- ARSON!

I still hunger. I must eat. Please forgive me.

"Questions," Part 3
Dedicated To: Jerry "The Joker" Robinson
Finally, I remember her name. Wanda Blake. I remember how her grandma had a fit at the wedding, when she found out Wanda wasn't going to take my last name.

Oh, my. Simmons, you poor pathetic fool! Threaten away, you little maggot. It'll do you no good, 'cause you've been locked into a deal I can't lose.

We always wanted children, but something wasn't right. Doctors said it was no use. But it was me!

The Dragon Archives (1982-1992) by Erik Larsen

Graphic Fantasy (1982) #1-2, Megaton (1983) #1-4
I'm The Dragon. The name may sound familiar... I've been playing the part of a super-guy for the last eight years.

...He called himself The Bronze Man. He killed my wife... With Sue gone... I've had to raise our daughter by myself.

Paul? Paul... what is it honey? What's wrong?

...Thinking about how much things have changed since the days when I was head of the S.O.S.

DAMN! Man, I'm going to be glad when Reagan's term is over with! I can't take too much more of this!

My wife. I've got to find her... Let her know I'm back, I'm alive.

It breaks my heart to report another couple of mafia killings. It looks like our boy the "heart surgeon" is at it again.

Hosts Diabolu Frank & Mister Fixit devote the rest of the episode to covering your welcome comments, which given the involvement of both, means an enormous amount of unforeseeable tangents and lengthy exploration of same. The primary theme is comics studios that owed much of their existence to the rise of Image, including the Malibu Ultraverse, Milestone Media, and Axis Comics. The talk also serves as a prelude to upcoming subjects of the show, especially Wildstorm and Extreme Studios.

I want to die... again.

1987: Services were held today for Lt. Colonel Al Simmons at Arlington Cemetery in Virginia.

1992: I remember there was someone... to love. Someone to hate. And I was something. Something special.

Youngblood Megaton Explosion (1987-1993) by Rob Liefeld

The government has a department for almost everything. In 1984, our heads of state decided that they needed a powerful public force; a force that could represent the government to the people. They also needed an edge to put our nation ahead of other world powers; an edge that they could control and the people could trust. By the end of the year, YOUNGBLOOD was underway.

Coming Soon....

Image Comics celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2017, and Rolled Spine Podcasts will applaud (and chide) the company with a new show looking at its longest running title! The Spawnometer is an issue by issue indexing podcast devoted to Todd McFarlane's Spawn franchise. The title references the iconic visual device representing the meter that gauged Spawn's necroplamic power reserves, which counted down each time he used his supernatural abilities until he ran out of time in his cursed second life. To represent this conceit, our episodes will cover each issue of the comic book series at a length of no more than one minute per page. We'll also be looking at Spawn's various spin-off and media adaptations, as well as covering other early Image Comics super-hero series as brief back-up features.
